Federal Member for Parkes, Mark Coulton has welcomed the announcement of a $100 million Women’s Safety Package to help keep women and their children safe.
Prime Minister, the Hon Malcolm Turnbull MP today announced the Women’s Safety Package which will deliver immediate and practical measures to reduce violence against women and their children.
Mr Coulton echoed comments made by the Prime Minister at a press conference this morning that any form of domestic violence will not be tolerated by this Government.
“As the Prime Minister said, disrespecting women is unacceptable, it is unacceptable at every level,” Mr Coulton said.
Following a spate of tragic incidents resulting from domestic violence, Mr Coulton said that governments across Australia have made addressing this issue a national priority.
“We are acting today because the recent spike of violent incidents against women has shown we need to be doing more to keep women and their children safe,” Mr Coulton said.
“So far this year, more than 60 women have been killed in domestic violence incidents. This is simply unacceptable.”
Mr Coulton is calling on everyone across the Parkes electorate to take a stand against domestic violence and say enough is enough.
“Women and children must be safe in their homes and together we need to make Australia a place where women and children feel safe,” Mr Coulton said.
The Women’s Safety Package responds to the preliminary advice of Council of Australian Governments (COAG) Advisory Panel on Reducing Violence against Women and their Children which was provided to COAG at its special meeting on 23 July 2015. The Panel is chaired by Ken Lay and deputy chaired by Rosie Batty and Heather Nancarrow.
