Motorists travelling along the Mitchell Highway between Nyngan and Bourke can now enjoy safer journeys, thanks to the completion of a $12 million safety upgrade.
Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton said work to widen the road along a total of almost 47 kilometres is now complete.
“The Mitchell Highway is a key freight route, and the completion of this upgrade is great news for local road users, freight operators and tourists who will now be able to experience safer and more efficient journeys when travelling along this road,” Mr Coulton said.
“One-metre-wide sealed shoulders have been installed along several sections of the highway, which will allow for a safe correction if a vehicle leaves the road, reducing the risk of crashes.
“As someone who frequents this highway and spends a lot of time in the car, I know just how important it is to make our regional roads safer.
“This life-saving upgrade will help ensure all motorists reach their destinations safely.”
The upgrade was jointly funded by the former Federal Coalition Government’s Road Safety Program and the NSW Government as part of a commitment to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries on our rural and regional roads.
