Federal Member for Parkes, Mark Coulton has welcomed the release of journalist Peter Greste.
Mr Coulton said that Australians were pleased that Mr Greste would be able to come home after spending more than 400 days in an Egyptian jail.
“Peter Greste’s family were tireless in their efforts to secure his release,” said Mr Coulton.
“Peter’s brother, Andrew Greste, and his parents Juris and Lois, have worked relentlessly to see that Peter’s imprisonment was brought to an end.”
Mr Coulton also commended the many Australians who had advocated on Peter’s behalf, including senior members of the Government.
“Freedom of the press is an essential tenet of every free and democratic society. I understand that Peter is currently on his way home with his brother Mike. I am very glad that Peter will soon be reunited with his family on Australian soil.”
