A company developing thermal energy storage technology based in Lake Cargelligo will be able to expand its operations and play its key role in producing low-cost green hydrogen thanks to a whopping $9.8 million Federal Government investment.
The funding, provided through the $1.3 billion Modern Manufacturing Initiative (MMI), has been awarded to Toshiba International Corporation for its low-cost hydrogen project, which will be developed in conjunction with Graphite Energy and MGA Thermal at Graphite Energy’s Storage Centre in Lake Cargelligo.
Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton said this funding will provide a huge boost, not only to Graphite Energy, but for the Lake Cargelligo community.
“It’s fantastic to see great local manufacturers like Graphite Energy here in Lake Cargelligo growing, creating jobs, and taking more of their outstanding product to the world,” Mr Coulton said.
“This grant shores up Graphite Energy’s operations at Lake Cargelligo, enabling it to expand its production capability and employ more staff in order to participate in the emerging green hydrogen market.”
Graphite Energy CEO Peter Lemmich said they are very appreciative of the support being provided by the Federal Government’s Modern Manufacturing Initiative.
“The success of our MMI application is further validation of the development of our thermal energy storage technology,” Mr Lemmich said.
“Working in partnership with Toshiba International Corporation and using a storage media manufactured by Australian company MGA Thermal, we will be developing a hydrogen production system with integrated thermal energy storage, here at our Lake Cargelligo facility.
“This project is the first stage of our redevelopment of the Lake Cargelligo facility, where we will be developing a Low Emissions Technology Precinct that will support the sustainable energy transition for agriculture, mining and industry, providing positive impacts and opportunities for Lake Cargelligo and other regional communities.”
Minister for Industry, Energy and Emissions Reduction Angus Taylor said the MMI funding for the Recycling and Clean Energy National Manufacturing Priority will help spur opportunities for our manufacturers to grow here at home and into other export markets.
“The Government is taking action to reduce Australia’s emissions and secure our economic future, and our investments will help our manufacturers be part of the solution,” Minister Taylor said.
“This funding will help some of our most innovative businesses unlock private investment, drive more opportunities in manufacturing as well as create new local jobs.”
The MMI is the centrepiece of the Government’s $1.5 billion Modern Manufacturing Strategy, designed to position Australia as a globally recognised, high-quality and sustainable manufacturing nation.
