Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton has slammed the Labor Government for today blocking debate on its proposed New Vehicle Efficiency Standard which he said is appalling and shows a complete disregard for democracy.
“The Labor Government has just reached a new low, ramming its New Vehicle Efficiency Standard bill through the House without debate, completely flying in the face of transparency and accountability,” Mr Coulton said.
“The Prime Minister promised us greater transparency, and yet when it comes to debating legislation as important as this, the Labor Government has gagged the debate, refusing to allow any scrutiny over this tax that will have a significant impact on our farmers, our tradies and our families.
“The Coalition has been staunchly opposed to this family car tax which will add thousands of dollars to the cost of our most popular vehicles to subsidise the cost of electric vehicles for those in the inner city.
“This tax is an attack on the people of the bush, people who rely on SUVs, 4WDs and utes to go about their daily lives – to take their kids to school or go to work.
“Labor says it wants to ease the cost-of-living crisis, and yet this tax will only make it more expensive for families wanting buy a new vehicle.
“I have been outspoken about this tax from day one and was going to join my colleagues in debating this legislation in the House today.
“Shutting down this debate is just shameful. It’s a denial of democracy and goes to the heart of the lack of integrity and cowardice of this Government.
“We have to ask ourselves, why is Labor so scared of transparency?”
