Ahead of the 2016 federal election, the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) last week released details of its proposal for changes to the federal electoral boundaries in New South Wales (NSW).
Under the proposed changes, the Parkes electorate would see a rather significant increase in its geographic size. Currently this electorate covers almost one third of NSW, approximately 256,000 square kilometres. The AEC’s proposal would see this area increase to approximately 402,500 square kilometres, covering 50 percent of NSW.
Irrespective of the final determination of the NSW boundary changes, I am committed to running as a candidate for the Parkes electorate at the 2016 federal election.
In the event that the AEC’s proposal becomes the final determination, I would very much look forward to embracing the challenges of representing 50 percent of NSW.
While it would be very disappointing to lose the relationships I have established with my constituents in the Gwydir, Mudgee and Wellington areas, I would look forward to reengaging with the people of the Gunnedah area.
Having represented the communities of Western NSW for the past 8 years, I would also welcome the opportunity of becoming acquainted with the residents of Far Western NSW.
The AEC are now inviting members of the public concerned about the proposal to submit written objections relating to the redistribution.
Written objections must be lodged no later than 6pm AEDT Friday, 13 November 2015.
For further information or to lodge an objection please visit http://www.aec.gov.au/Electorates/Redistributions/2014/nsw/objections.htm.
