Federal Member for Parkes, Mark Coulton has described this week’s White Ribbon Day as another important event that raises awareness of the blight of domestic violence throughout our communities.
With towns across his electorate ranking as some of the worst in NSW for reported cases of domestic violence, Mr Coulton is taking the opportunity to reinforce his message that domestic violence will not be tolerated.
“Any form of domestic violence, whether physical or emotional, is simply unacceptable,” Mr Coulton said.
“Unfortunately, there is still a real stigma attached to domestic violence which prevents people not just reporting incidences of violence, but also talking about the issue generally.”
Currently in Canberra for Parliamentary sittings, Mr Coulton this morning attended the Stand-up Against Violence Breakfast at Parliament House.
This event gave our elected representatives the opportunity to take a stand against violence against women and children, something Mr Coulton would like to see happen right across the communities he represents.
“I implore everyone to take a stand against domestic violence in some way,” Mr Coulton said.
“As wonderful as it is that so many of us will purchase and wear white ribbons this week, we need to do more.
“We need to talk about this issue and ensure that our children, at a very young age, learn to say no to domestic violence and treat others with respect.
“We all deserve to feel safe in our own households; our homes should be the safest place we can go to.
“I am very proud of the funding that this Coalition Government has committed to domestic violence this year but I also know this is just the tip of the iceberg and I will continue to work hard on this issue.”
