A half-million-dollar boost for the Coonamble Showgrounds will allow show-goers and exhibitors to enjoy improved facilities, thanks to the Federal Coalition Government’s Regional Agricultural Show Development Grants program.
Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton, who visited the showgrounds during a recent visit to Coonamble, said the upgrades will leave a lasting impression on locals and visitors alike.
“Upgraded show facilities means more visitors to our country towns once we get ahead of the coronavirus. It means more local employment and more support for local businesses,” Mr Coulton said.
“It’s not just ag shows that will benefit from this funding – it’s entire rural communities.
“Well done to the Coonamble Show Society on their foresight and success in securing this funding – I look forward to seeing works underway.”
The facilities that will be improved as part of the project include the horse and cattle complex, poultry pavilion, arena fencing, pavilion facilities and water infrastructure.
Henry Moxham, President of the Coonamble Show Society, welcomed the grant.
“On behalf of the Coonamble Show Society, I’d like to share our appreciation of this grant,” Mr Moxham said.
“It’s such an exciting boost for our entire community as we come out of the drought.
“The vast majority of the materials and labour for these upgrades will be sourced locally, so it’s a great economic stimulus. And the double-whammy is that the whole community will benefit from upgraded showground assets.”
The Australian Government is spending a further $36 million to help agricultural show societies recover from the effects of COVID-19, ensuring they can continue after the pandemic.
Eligible local shows in the Parkes electorate could receive a reimbursement of up to $70,000 under the Supporting Agricultural Shows program to deal with cash flow pressures.
