Further Green Army opportunities are now available for young people in the Parkes electorate with another two projects set to begin in the coming weeks. Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton said the service provider, Conservation Volunteers Australia, has commenced recruitment for projects which will be conducted in the Warren and Brewarrina districts. This follows the recent announcement of the Brewarrina Fishtraps Conservation and the restoration works of the Boobera Lagoon projects. Mr Coulton said in Warren the Green Army team will undertake work to extend walking trails and interpretive infrastructure at the Tiger Bay Wetlands and adjoining Window on the Wetlands Centre through a project sponsored by Riversmart Australia Limited. “The project will also include revegetation, installation of visitor infrastructure and creation of user friendly access and walking trails” Mr Coulton said. He said in the Brewarrina area conserving environmental and heritage assets would be carried out in a project sponsored by the Local Land Services Western Region. “The project will involve cultural site identification, recording and maintenance, fencing, and mentor repatriation works to the heritage cemeteries at Brewarrina and Goodooga” Mr Coulton said. “Cultural heritage survey work will be carried out at Myandetta prior to cultural burning works with technical advice form the local fire brigade and mentoring from elders” he added. Mr Coulton said vertebrate pest eradication work will be carried out on neighbouring properties within the influence zone of Narran Lake Ramsar site. Green Army projects provide enthusiastic 17-24 year olds with opportunities to take part in important environmental and conservation activities, while at the same time receiving training and qualifications. “Green Army participants undertake accredited training and receive a Green Army allowance for the duration of their project. Participants are supported to obtain Certificate 1 or 2 qualifications or nationally endorsed skills set to help them prepare for the workforce or improve their career opportunities” Mr Coulton said. Participation is open to a diverse range of young people, including Indigenous Australians, school leavers, gap year students, graduates and job seekers.
