Men’s Sheds helping men to stay healthy
Men’s Sheds in the electorate of Parkes are helping men to stay healthy and strong in every way.
The many sheds around the electorate offer a friendly welcoming environment where men can connect with each other without pressure and as Co-Chair of the Parliamentary Friends of Men’s Sheds, I fully support the association’s aims to promote social inclusion and education among men in every
local community.
Feeling part of a social group is important to emotional and mental health and every day Men’s Sheds provide men with an opportunity for companionship.
Although mental illness affects both men and women, we know that men are less likely to seek help. In 2016, the rate of suicide among Australian males was more than three times that of females.
The Coalition Government continues to fund Sheds across the electorate to support the mental health and overall
Two Men’s Sheds in the electorate of Parkes will receive grants under round 16 of the National Shed Development Programme to help them buy tools, maintain sheds and host community activities focused on men’s health issues.
The Shed Coonabarabran Inc. will receive $5000 to hold a one day major Men’s Health Expo in partnership with local services and
The funding is part of the total $5.1 million the Government is providing to the Australian Men’s Shed Association to support Men’s Sheds over the three years to June 2019.
All sheds that meet the definition of a men’s shed are eligible to apply for funding under the National Shed Development Programme.

Regional Telecommunications Review
The 2018 Regional Telecommunications Review committee that will examine communication issues in regional, rural and remote areas has been announced.
The committee is convened every three years to examine regional telecommunication services in Australia.
Six members have been appointed to the Committee:
This is an opportunity for those in the bush to have their say on how they use telecommunication services and the issues that affect them.
The review will commence shortly and I encourage everyone in the electorate of Parkes wishing to have their say to participate.
