More than $3 million in Building Better Regions’ Fund grants
It has been another terrific week of announcements with the declaration of more than $3 million in grants under the Building Better Regions’ Fund [BBRF].
After a competitive merit-based selection process, Australian Government funding has approved four projects in the Electorate of Parkes under the BBRF’s Infrastructure Projects Stream. Each successful submission will receive funding up to a maximum of 50 per cent of the total project cost.
Residents of the rural township of Curlewis can look forward to a guaranteed water supply with $2.6 million for a key community project that will be undertaken by Gunnedah Shire Council.
The funding will ensure the construction of a 15.8km gravity fed pipeline from Gunnedah, along with two 0.5ML reinforced concrete reservoirs, which will provide quality water to 600 residents and businesses in Curlewis within the next 18 months. At present the current drinking water supply to the township is supplied by bores and the quality does not meet Australian Standards for drinking or hardness. This means residents are forced to use unsuitable water, rely on tank water from rainfall or buy in water by the truckload.
The new pipeline will overcome these problems while the social benefits of having a quality water supply to the township will extend beyond the construction phase with a project life of the proposed pipeline of 80-100 years.
The township of Trangie will receive $176,000 for a much-needed facility to provide respite for adults and children with disabilities. The grant will help develop a respite centre which will drive both economic activity and social improvement in the township. It will also provide a vital service to families in Trangie and surrounding districts who currently do not have reasonable or reliable access to such a service.
A Moree aged and disability service provider will receive $95,000 to extend and enhance the provision of its services to people in outer rural and remote areas. The funding will also help people who are ageing, disabled, transport disadvantaged, carers and volunteers.
A large range of social benefits will be delivered for the residents of the Tottenham area with the announcement of $181,450 in funding for a multipurpose facility at the town’s pool. The Tottenham community will be boosted by ensuring a key piece of community infrastructure remains open and by delivering a facility that will promote social connection and cohesion.
