Members of what is affectionately known as Coonabarabran’s “Dead People Society” (DPS) are set to undertake further work at the iconic Memorial Wall at the old Coonabarabran cemetery.
Federal Member for Parkes, Mark Coulton has presented the DPS Local and Family History Group with a cheque for over $5,000 which will contribute to the group’s landscape project that has also received support from the local Council and Rotary club.
Discussing the project with members of the DPS, Mr Coulton said it was clear the talent and passion that these members bring to the Coonabarabran community.
“The members of the DPS are such great people and their passion for family history is second to none,” Mr Coulton said.
“I am so pleased to support this project that will see landscaping of the area adjacent to the Memorial Wall at the cemetery that was installed by the DPS.
“There is so much history and mystery in that one wall; it is astounding that there are 767 unknown graves in Coonabarabran and for the DPS to commit so much time and effort to this project means a lot to the families associated with these graves as well as the broader community.”
The funding announcement is a result of Round 1 of the Coalition Government’s Stronger Communities Programme. The purpose of the programme is to improve local community participation and cohesion whilst contributing to vibrant and viable communities.
Mr Coulton is a passionate advocate of the Stronger Communities Programme and was overwhelmed by the community response he received for Round 1 from right across the federal electorate of Parkes.
“For a long time I felt there was a need for greater support for incorporated not-for-profit and local government organisations to help build and maintain small infrastructure projects that would benefit our local communities,” Mr Coulton said.
“The fact that my office received over 90 expressions of interests for projects under
Round 1of this programme certainly confirms my belief that there is a need and I am extremely pleased to be able to help do something about it.
“Our local volunteer organisations such as the Coonabarabran DPS are pivotal to our community’s identities and this programme certainly goes some way to supporting them and the terrific work they do.”
