The Coalition’s plan for real action for the Arts

19-August-2010

The Coalition is committed to building a thriving, innovative, unique and prosperous arts and cultural sector.

Today, the arts and cultural sectors in Australia are recognised worldwide for our exemplary visual, performing and literary artists and arts companies.

The Coalition recognises Australian arts and culture is characterised by a rich diversity of art forms practised across this vast country.

Importantly, the Coalition supports the arts and is determined to ensure that all regions of Australia are able to enjoy the cultural and economic benefits of a strong and secure arts sector.

A Coalition Government will implement a practical and affordable action plan to help the arts sector grow. This plan involves real support and real action that will make a real difference to the arts community and, through it, to the lives of all Australians.

To help the arts sector, a Coalition Government will:

1. Promote the development of the arts in regional areas

We will restore funding to the Regional Arts Fund and support arts tours to small and remote communities and introduce an acquisition fund to boost the permanent collections of regional art galleries.

2. Support local film production

The Coalition will introduce a temporary film production fund to boost investment in new films and refocus Australian film production on commercial outcomes. The Coalition will improve the Producer Offset to better support cash flow for screen production.

3. Introduce a musical instrument loan scheme

The Coalition will make loans of up to $35,000 available to students of specified learning and development institutions (such as the Australian National Academy of Music) to help them affordably acquire the expensive equipment vital to their future careers.
