Representatives from Gulgong community meet with Minister Roxon
12-October-2011
Representatives of the Mid-Western Regional Council and Gulgong Health Council, along with Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton, and the Member for Hunter Joel Fitzgibbon met with the Minister for Health and Ageing the Hon Nicola Roxon to discuss the need for funding for an additional six aged care places for the Gulgong MPS facility.
Minister Roxon announced in May that the Federal Government would fund the aged care component of the new Gulgong Hospital and would supply recurrent funding for six flexible aged care places.
However, the Mid-Western Regional Council believes there is a need for at least 12 flexible aged care places for the Gulgong district and approached Mr Coulton regarding the matter.
“I arranged the meeting with Minister Roxon as I understand the concerns of the Council. The Gulgong Hospital services a larger area and there is a large ageing population in the district,” Mr Coulton stated.
“It has been a long road since the sudden closure of the Hospital in Gulgong last year. We are fortunate to have a commitment on the table from both the State and Federal Government to ensure that the Multi-Purpose Health Service will go ahead. However we need to ensure it is adequately funded to provide high quality health services,” Mr Coulton stated.
“I am sure the Minister will consider the points raised by the representatives from Gulgong.”
Mayor Des Kennedy, General Manager Warwick Bennett and Chairman of the local Health Council Peter Doran made the trip to Canberra to meet with the Minister today and while no commitment was made by the Minister, they were pleased with how the discussions proceeded.
“The meeting was extremely positive and we are grateful that the Minister is listening to Gulgong’s concerns and that she understands not only the need for an MPS but a larger MPS than is currently proposed. We are also grateful that she is continuing to work with her state counterpart to achieve a larger facility suitable to Gulgong,” commented Mayor Des Kennedy.
