Coulton extends support for HIPPY program

Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton today had the pleasure of hosting a morning tea for the tutors, parents and children of the North Dubbo Home Interaction Program for Parents and Youngsters (HIPPY).

The HIPPY program is a two year home based parenting and early childhood enrichment program that works with young parents and carers to promote school readiness and to encourage parents to be their child’s first teacher.

“I am really very supportive of the HIPPY program. Education is the key to empowering our children and this program encourages parents to get involved in their child’s learning very early on,” Mr Coulton said.

The morning tea was organised by Mr Coulton and allowed the parents to express the importance of the program and the benefits they have seen for their children.

“The program helps parents to participate in the child’s learning through guidance and mentoring. However, more importantly the program allows parents to foster friendships that they can carry throughout their children’s schooling years.”

“The parents who came to the morning tea expressed how important this program was for the educational development of their children but also how the program empowered them to participate in their child’s learning.”

Federal Government funding for the HIPPY program is due to conclude in December 2012. Mr Coulton stated he would be making representations to the Minister for Childcare the Hon Kate Ellis MP to ensure funding for this program was continued beyond 2012.

“It is important to support a program that not only assists with the education of children but also extends the support to the families,” Mr Coulton stated.
