Local students visit Parliament House
07-July-2011
Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton met with Parkes Electorate students Tiffany Hunt from Coolatai and Richard Quigley from Trangie, who were visiting Parliament House as part of the Investing in Youth program.
Investing in Youth is an initiative of the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC) which aims to address the shortage of graduates in agricultural sciences by partnering with sponsors to support students through the course of their university studies by providing them with a financial bursary and professional support in the form of mentoring, professional development workshops and industry placements.
It is hoped that through exposing the students to a range of positive experiences and industry contacts they will feel connected to their industry and therefore be committed to pursuing a career in agriculture. There are currently 19 students at 8 different universities participating in the Investing in Youth program.
“It was an honour to meet with Richard and Tiffany. They both hail from small communities in the Parkes Electorate and are evidence of the quality of the youth in country areas such as Trangie and Coolatai.”
“The Investing in Youth initiative is an important program and I am proud that two students from the Parkes Electorate have been selected to participate. It is always great to see a program that encourages and assists our young people to get involved in careers in the agricultural sector.”
“Richard and Tiffany both have a very bright future ahead of them, and I look forward to hearing of their impact on the industry in the future.”
