Moree Solar Power Station

20-June-2011

Federal Member for Parkes, Mark Coulton has welcomed the announcement by the Federal Government that a $923 million solar power station will be built in Moree.

“Moree’s climate is perfect to make the most of solar technology due to its almost year round sunshine,” Mr Coulton said. “The economic opportunities that will come with the project are set to revitalise the town and region.”

Work on the solar power station will start from next year, with over 400 jobs expected to be created in the construction phase alone, and an estimated 30 jobs for the operation of the power plant.

“I really must congratulate the Moree Plains Shire Council for being proactive in this cause and for recognising the potential of this project. It will create many employment opportunities both in and around Moree, and deliver an additional indirect economic boost as well.”

“I would also like to recognise the commitment BP Solar has had to the Moree project. It is this commitment that has lead to this successful outcome.”

“This project, which is touted to be among the largest in the world, will no doubt put Moree on the global map,” Mr Coulton said. “It is a very exciting chapter for Moree and the surrounding area.”
