Gulgong Hospital another step closer

26-May-2011

The long awaited announcement that the Federal Government will fund the aged care component of the new Gulgong Hospital has been made today. Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton has expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, which he has been working hard to secure.

Minister for Health Nicola Roxon today announced the Government’s intention to supply the recurrent funding for six flexible aged care places.

“This is a great outcome for the people of Gulgong,” Mr Coulton stated today. “It has been a long road since the closure of the hospital last year, however we now have on the table a commitment from both the state and federal Government’s that will ensure the residents of Gulgong and surrounding areas have access to high-quality health services.”

Mr Coulton has worked with Minister for Health Nicola Roxon to secure funding for the aged care component of the new hospital. Mr Coulton explained that the delay has been unfortunate; however he firmly believes that a new facility that caters for aged care, emergency, palliative, rehabilitation and sub-acute beds is exactly the right mix for Gulgong.

“There will still need to be an application to the Federal Government for assistance with construction, but I believe now we have the commitment for the recurrent funding, things should start to fall into place.”

“Minister Roxon has been proactive in this process and I would like to acknowledge her efforts in making today’s announcement possible.”

THE HON NICOLA ROXON MP
Minister for Health and Ageing

MEDIA RELEASE
26 May 2011

AGED CARE PLACES APPROVED FOR MULTI-PURPOSE SERVICE IN GULGONG

Minister for Health and Ageing Nicola Roxon today announced funding for the allocation of new, flexible aged care places in Gulgong.

These places will help meet the needs of the local ageing population by providing high level residential care, transitional aged care, rehabilitation care and palliative care services as part of the NSW Government’s proposed Multi-Purpose Health Service.

Minister Roxon said that the Gillard Government will provide around $305,000 a year in recurrent funding to deliver this service for the Gulgong community.

“We look forward to working with the NSW Government to deliver these benefits for the Gulgong community,” Minister Roxon said.

“There is widespread support in the Gulgong community to establish a Multi-Purpose Service, so I know today’s announcement will be strongly welcomed by the local community.

“In particular, I acknowledge the efforts of the local Federal MP, Mark Coulton, in working to make this new service for the people of Gulgong a reality.”

The proposed Multi-Purpose Service will form part of the HealthOne facility being constructed on the old Gulgong Hospital site.

Minister Roxon said a Multi-Purpose Service was the best service model to meet Gulgong’s health care needs.

“A Multi-Purpose Service will allow health and aged care services to be delivered locally, to be accessible, responsive and cost efficient. The proposed MPS would provide a single point of contact for the community to access all health services,” Minister Roxon said.
