NSW election result sends clear message to Federal Government and Independents

28-March-2011

The results of the NSW State Election, which saw regional Independent members lose their seats was “a resounding vote of no confidence” in the Federal Independent MPs Tony Windsor and Rob Oakeshott, Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton stated today.

“As I visited polling booths throughout the Parkes electorate on Saturday the overwhelming message from constituents was their anger and frustration at the Independents supporting Labor.”

“The backing of the Gillard Government by Mr Oakeshott and Mr Windsor had a huge impact of the results of the NSW election. They need to take a hard look at themselves and start to put their constituents before their own political ambitions.”

Mr Coulton believed the NSW election was also a vote on the Carbon tax.

“Voters are concerned with the increasing cost of living that will only get worse with a carbon tax. I believe as Mr Windsor and Mr Oakeshott stood with the Prime Minister and Leader of the Greens Bob Brown and announced the carbon tax plan, they did so at their own detriment.”

“What is even more evident is that no Greens members were elected in any electorate in NSW,” Mr Coulton stated. “This should be taken as a clear message that NSW does not want a carbon tax and if the Prime Minister refutes this, perhaps she should take her carbon tax to an election and let Australia decide.”

“This tax on civilisation took a huge hit at the polls on the weekend as did the regional Independents.”
